Ginseng: A Natural Health Supplement

Author: bethma
There are eleven species of the plant genus Panax and each of them is known as ginseng. Each species of ginseng is a slow-growing plant that has a fleshy root which is used for commercial puposes. Ginseng leaves are also sometimes used for various purposes.
Ginseng is native to the Northern Hemisphere, and specially to the East and in cool climates. China, and Korea are two countries in Asia that are major producers of ginseng. Siberian ginseng is not actually ginseng, but is another plant belonging to the Eleutherococcus family.
Traditionally, ginseng roots are consumed for the treatment of ...
diabetes insipidus (Type II diabetes) and for the treatment of sexual dysfunction in men. Ginseng roots are mostly consumed either whole or sliced and in a dried form; ginseng is also added to soups and beverages for boosting energy levels. Also, according to traditional Chinese medicine, each variety of ginseng has healing properties and is valuable for regulation of body temperature, proper blood circulation, controlling fever and respiratory tract disorders.
However, modern science has not been able to prove the medicinal benefits of ginseng for sure. Apparently, ginseng acts like an adaptogen, increasing the body's resistance to stress. Ginseng is also apparently anti-inflammatory, improves men's sexual life, is rich in antioxidants, is anticarcinogenic and boosts immunity.
However, ginseng has certain side-effects. It has been observed- although not scientifically proven- that ginseng hinders sleep, causes variations in blood pressure, diarrhea, nausea and headaches. It also lowers blood sugar and has oestrogenic effects. Ginseng also may lower heartbeat and should be avoided by heart patients. Ginseng has also been found to interfere with the functioning of various prescribed drugs such as anticoagulants, insulin, antipsychotic drugs, and drugs that stimulate the central nervous system (CNS).
